Gilbert | Chandler Newborn Photos

This sweet mom was a little frazzled when we met. Her little one was already 14 days old, and her first round of newborn photos didn’t really turn out as she’d envisioned. She was crossing her fingers for a do-over that was amazing before her little one was too old. No pressure! A friend and client put me in touch with her through Facebook and I am so glad she did. I hate the thought of anyone not having beautiful, precious shots that they are in love with of their tiny bundle, because they just grow so stinking fast! I was so relieved when things went perfectly, despite the sun playing peekaboo, and I was able to get some beautiful shots of her tiny features, adorable faces and big beautiful eyes, as well as some of their first days as a family.

I absolutely love when I am invited into a brand new little family’s home to capture those sweet first days when they are just getting to know their little one. It is a stressful, chaotic and absolutely amazing time, and I know just how important these images are to you because I am a mom to 3 myself. Newborn photos are best done between birth and about 10-12 days old if at all possible, so be sure to get choose your photographer and get penciled in on their schedule well before your due date so you can cross that off your list of things to do when baby comes. My newborn sessions are all done right in your own home, and I do everything I can to make things as easy and stress-free as possible for you. Ready to get your little bundle on my schedule? Send me a few details and I’ll be right in touch!

Drowsy, sleepy babies are ideal for newborn sessions, but it doesn’t always work out that way. And you know what? That’s ok! I always try to prepare my clients with advice on how to make sure their little one is off to slumber land when I arrive, and I’d say 90% of the time it works like a charm, but once in a while I get a little peanut that just doesn’t want to miss out on one minute of the action. It is important to keep in mind that babies don’t do what we tell them, and just know that even if she’s bright eyed the entire time the end result will still be gorgeous images of her teeny tiny baby features to remember this fleeting stage forever.

This little doll was one of those exceptions, and it’s just perfect.  She just stared at me and followed me around with her big blue eyes, pretty impressive for 10 days old! So there you have it. Proof that even if baby doesn’t sleep through our session we can still get adorable, beautiful, perfect images of their first days for you to stare at and love forever.

I will admit, I’ve had a bit of a love/hate relationship with newborn sessions for a long time. I love babies, LOVE love love babies, but I started to dread photographing them. All of the STUFF, the props, the outfits, the tears and the stress (for baby and me!). More ended in inconsolable crying and missed shots than I care to admit. I just felt like there had to be a better way, and I went on a mission to find it. Over the past several months I’ve taken some ah-mazing continuing education workshops with some even more amazing fellow photographers, and friends, I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!

Being a newborn is HARD. Your cozy, warm, safe place you’ve been living in for months disappears and suddenly you find bright light in your tiny eyes, uncomfortable textures on your baby skin, and many hands passing you around. So why do we want to make things more stressful by contorting baby into strange positions, wrapping her up in scratchy fabrics, or laying her on hard surfaces (how well would YOU sleep in a wooden bowl??).  There is another way! Introducing… Naturally Newborn Sessions!

Naturally Newborn Sessions are calm, quiet, peaceful sessions with baby-led posing, disturbing baby as little as possible. Newborn photos can be beautiful and classic without all of the fuss, just baby, my custom newborn posing pillow, and some soft fabrics loosely draped just so. I work through the session capturing baby’s every detail from every angle, with very minimal movement of baby. This allows me to move quickly and quietly through the session so you can get back to the business of snuggling. Newborn sessions shouldn’t need to last hours if baby is allowed to be comfortable and content! After about 20-30 minutes with your newborn, we will move on to some simple and beautiful family photos with mom, dad and siblings. Newborn sessions also take place right in your own home, so there is no need to pack up baby and head to a studio, and baby is safe, warm and comfortable in her own environment.

Now here’s the really exciting part. SO EXCITING!! All newborn sessions now include a sweet little film, showcasing your little one’s first movements, yawns, stretches, and adorable little faces. Photographs are amazing and beautiful but nothing really brings you back to the moment like video. During our session, I’ll be switching my camera constantly between photos and video, and these little snippets will be crafted into your little one’s very first feature film, complete with the perfect little background tune.

Are you expecting in the Gilbert, Chandler or Phoenix metro area? It’s time to schedule your session now! Don’t want until baby arrives, as newborn sessions are best done as early as possible, within the first 12 days or so. I only accept a limited number of newborns per week, to allow flexibility for babies who arrive early or late enough that we need to reschedule.  If you’ve missed the boat, don’t fret! I can safely photograph babies up to about 3 weeks old in this style, they just may not be quite as sleepy and easy going.

Now keep scrolling for a little sampling of this dreamy, sleepy newborn experience, and a peek at a film! ❤️

It probably seems a little quiet here over the past few months, and for good reason! Right after the busy summer season slowed down, my newest little assistant decided to join us a little earlier than planned. But then, when do babies ever follow our plans? I think she is absolutely perfect, even if I am a little biased, and I’m loving experiencing all the little firsts all over again. The blog, Facebook and Instagram will get a little behind while I soak up all of her newborn cuddles and get to know her. My response time will be a little slower than usual for the next few weeks, but I am already booking 2016 weddings, and have just a few of my very limited spots left for family sessions in 2015 – be sure to snap one up quickly!

The biggest compliment I receive as a photographer, is when past clients call me again and again to capture their milestones as their little families grow! There is no more special treat than watching a couple’s love blossom from engaged, to married, and then to a growing family. You’ll remember this little guy’s mom and dad from their engagement session at the Anaheim Packing House and wedding at Oak Glen’s Buttercup Cottage last year. Time flies, and now they are a family of three!

Little man was so easy going during his newborn photo session, thanks to good planning on his mama’s part. The best time to capture those sleepy, smooshie, curled up babies is during their first 10-14 days. If your little family is growing by two feet this year, be sure to call me before you deliver, so we can get all the details squared away and be ready when your little one makes their big arrival!
