Or, how to survive a photo session with a toddler!
As Moms, we’ve all been there at some point. You just want one. single. photo. One perfect pose, one great smile, one happy kiddo. So what do you do when things don’t go as planned? You roll with it! Make lemons out of lemonade. Embrace the season of life you are living in right this moment. And breathe.
It can be so frustrating when you have an amazing beautiful vision in mind for your photo session and your little one has other ideas. I will tell you, this is like 90% of the time – you are not alone! You may leave our session feeling like you just witnessed a train wreck, but I assure you, I would NOT let you leave if we didn’t have some amazing images to work with! The best thing you can do is set reasonable expectations for your experience and you will come out loving the result. Working with kids means taking a different approach, and that’s my jam right there. I am not going to pose you in 15 different perfectly arranged poses and ask you to smile. Nope. We are going to have some FUN and the photos I deliver to you will show real life love, laughter and smiles. No cheese here, baby.
So what do we actually do when kiddos don’t play along?
We have a dance party.
We sing Baby Shark. A lot.
We bribe – yup, bribe. Don’t forget to pack the gummy bears but skip the Oreos and lollipops please!
We run around.
We tickle and giggle and tickle some more.
We play with toys. Be sure to pack at least one favorite!
We pile in for great big family bear hugs.
And all the while, I am right there stealing shots of smiles and giggles and big hugs and fancy dance moves. Because 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, those are the shots that are going to bring a flood of memories back to you. They will let you feel the moment, remember little personalities and make your heart sing.
I have been photographing this sweet little guy since he was the one in Mom’s tummy. Now he’s getting ready to be a big brother! He is full of energy and smiles and he definitely put us to work, but I am so in love with this session. Maternity photos look very different the second time around, but you know what? I think they could not be more perfect. <3 Well, minus the bump on the head. We explored a little too much! Can you spot the toddler in the shot of Mom and Dad? He’s there, hiding in the bushes!
